Jos glasina o koje ne slute na dobro. AMD je izgleda proracunao da ce lakse da se vrati u profitabilnost ako ima monopol sa cipsetovima. Steta sto ne vide dalje od nosa, na dugorocnom planu ovo moze da im napravi dosta problema. A nama sigurno hoce i na kratkorocnom.

Broadcom and Nvidia to Lose AMD Server Chipset Business

For years servers based on microprocessors from Advanced Micro Devices relied on core-logic sets from Broadcom and Nvidia Corp., however, when AMD releases its next generation Opteron processors, it will not allow any third-party chipsets to emerge and will rely solely on own chips.

“For 2010 moving forward, the solutions coming out from AMD will be AMD and on AMD at this time. We don't expect to see new chipsets from Nvidia or Broadcom for server implementations in 2010. But they will continue to support all existing platforms moving forward through 2010,” said AMD’s server business unit vice president Pat Patla on an interview with Betanews web-site.

Nvidia’s chipset business is facing tough problems these days: both AMD and Intel will roll out microprocessors with integrated graphics cores in the next couple of years, which will destroy the market of chipsets with integrated graphics adapter; Intel does not allow Nvidia to build chipsets for its Nehalem generation of microprocessors; AMD is making its own chipsets these days and Nvidia is rapidly losing AMD platform market share. While server chipsets are not high-volume product, they have very high profit margin, something tremendously important amid the global recession.

Broadcom and Nvidia did not comment on the news-story.
