RPC errors caused by Service Pack 2 and security updates
Microsoft security updates, released in late February 2005, cause strange errors on some machines running Windows XP SP2. Microsoft has acknowledged this problem but not provided a fix. The errors include, but are not limited to:
- Windows Update fails to function and gives the following error message:
"Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page…"
- Icons are missing from the Network Connections page
- Windows Installer fails to function and gives errors when trying to install or uninstall programs
- User is unable to burn CDs
- Various programs give access denied errors
- User is unable to change the Windows Desktop or menus
- McAfee VirusScan properties cannot be modified
