RE5 Goes 3D For The PC
We get some hands and eyes-on time with the enhanced PC version of the survival horror game.
July 16, 2009 - In March of this year, Capcom released the latest chapter in their respected survival horror franchise. Resident Evil 5 capitalized on the improvements made throughout the series with the addition of co-op play that allowed you and a friend to take on the hordes of Kijuju. While the PS3 and 360 versions of the game have been out for a while, allowing BSAA agents plenty of time to blast through the game multiple times, the PC version of the game has been pushed back to September 15 in North America and September 18. However, the delay will come with very cool features that could make it the definitive version, such as being able to play through the entire game in stereoscopic 3D. I recently had a chance to check out the PC version at Capcom's offices, and essentially rediscover the game in 3D.

Unlike the old anaglyph 3D format (which some people would recognize as the red and blue glasses that frequently give you a headache after a while of looking through the lenses), the newer stereoscopic lenses are modeled like sunglasses, with a dark tint to the lenses. Without getting into the finer details of 3D technology, players can wear stereoscopic lenses for hours without any of the side effects that older 3D technology produced. It can also be used to produce higher quality 3D images. Capcom and Nvidia specifically partnered together to work on adding 3D effects to Resident Evil 5, but not as a gimmick for intense sections or key cutscenes. Players will be able to experience the entire game, including cutscenes with stereoscopic 3D action(which is a first for gaming), making the action seem much more vibrant and striking than on the console. According to Capcom, the API of Nvidia's 3D Vision technology was so lightweight that they could easily incorporate it into the whole game with minor tweaks to the code.
