Cool NVIDIA Developing Chipset That Combines GPU And Southbridge?

NVIDIA is reportedly to develop a new chipset that combines the functions of a southbridge and a GPU, trying to reduce cost for PC makers and create smaller and lighter devices, according to a recent post at Digitimes.

The US Fair Trade Commission has recently ordered Intel to open up market competition, which is supposed to pave path for NVIDIA’s re-entry to the chipset business. But Intel should not be starting any negotiations with NVIDIA in the near future concerning this.

If the green giant manages to make it, the motherboard manufacturers could purchase Intel’s Sandy Bridge solution without the southbridge solution. This would save them US$10-15, but it’s unknown yet how much NVIDIA would charge for its combo solution. Anyway NVIDIA has a tough road ahead.
