World of Warcraft and Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
Blizzard's enormously popular massively multiplayer RPG, you'll be happy to know, works just beautifully under Vista. There are no funky workarounds needed to deal with non-admin user accounts, performance seems just great, and it even runs just dandy in a window. It currently doesn't add itself to the Games Explorer, but that's about it.

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
The latest stealth action thriller from Ubisoft doesn't work in Vista, but it's probably not any fault of the application itself – it's the StarForce copy protection. StarForce installs a low-level (ring 0) driver to access your optical drive, and this driver has not been Vista certified. So Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory asks you to reboot after installing, which you do, and then upon reboot Vista informs you that it won't load the driver due to "compatibility problems." The 32-bit version of Vista will allow unsigned kernel-level drivers if installed from an account with admin privileges -- as ours was. We were unable to find any sort of workaround or Vista-ready driver on the StarForce site.

ADVERTISEMENT What's worse, the StarForce driver will try (and fail) to load every time you reboot, even if you uninstall the game, and the removal tool doesn't work properly by default. It doesn't give you any indication that it didn't work, however. You have to run it as an administrator by accessing the Compatibility tab in the removal tool's Properties menu. Visually, it looks like it's doing the same thing as when you don't run it as an admin, but it will at least get StarForce off your system.

Interestingly, SC:CT was one of the very few games that actually showed up in the Games Explorer. And it doesn't even work in Vista! Someone's priorities are a little out of whack…

Oblivion, Steam/HL2, and Battlefield 2
We didn't notice any problems running Oblivion under Vista – it performed beautifully right from the start. Performance seems quite good already, though things got a bit choppy in outdoor scenes due to a bit more hard drive access than we'd like. Upgrading our test machine from 1GB of RAM to 2GB smoothed that out. It works fine in a window, too, even with all the fancy graphics options enabled. This is another one we would consider fully Vista-ready if only it would show up in the Games Explorer. Of course, there's nothing stopping you from launching the game the same old way you do in Windows XP.

Steam/Half-Life 2
We didn't have any problems at all running the Steam platform, downloading games, or playing Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Lost Coast, or Counter Strike: Source. That's no guarantee that every game available on Steam will work perfectly, but it appears that all the games based on the Source engine are good to go.

ADVERTISEMENT We're not sure how the Games Explorer is going to work with these games. Will it list all Steam games individually? With it list Steam as well? If so, how will it handle ratings? For now, nothing appears in the Games Explorer at all.

(Fun Trivia Fact: Gabe Newell was employee #273 at Microsoft, where he worked for 13 years before founding Valve)

Battlefield 2
We ran Battlefield 2 in both its native un-patched state and with the latest 1.3 patch, and both of them seemed to work just fine. There's one significant gotcha that crept up several times in our testing: Punkbuster. The Punkbuster anti-cheating code is a common part of many online games (particularly shooters), and it works by scanning game files to make sure they're not compromised. Most Battlefield 2 servers have Punkbuster enabled, and when we joined one, we got promptly kicked out of the game with a message saying Punkbuster failed due to "inadequate O/S privelages."

The solution is simple enough: right-click the BF2 icon, choose Properties, and then in the Compatibility tab check the box that says "Run this program as an administrator." After doing this, we encountered no problems joining any server.

There's one other small curiosity, too. During the installation, we received a warning that the game has only been tested on 32-bit Windows XP. You don't have to do anything here, just press "OK" and let it continue installing.

Civilization IV, Sims 2, and Guild Wars
When first installed, and un-patched, the game appeared to run just fine – until we tried to change video options. The whole video options screen was blank. Whoops!

Fortunately, everything worked perfectly fine after we ran the game's auto-update feature to patch it to the latest revision.

Sims 2
This may be the only game we tested where we can claim Vista-readiness completely finished. It installs easily, performance is just dandy (though it is a bit of an older game), all the game functions and options work…it even runs fine in a window by adding the –w parameter to the shortcut. Plus, it shows up in the Games Explorer, with proper box art and rating info. Nice to know one of the most popular Windows games among casual and admitted "non-gamers" has such a nice Vista experience already.

Guild Wars
Guild Wars, the sort-of massively multiplayer game with no monthly fee from NCSoft, appears to run wonderfully under Vista. All the game functions work fine, the background auto-downloading of game content zips along at a healthy pace (at least as fast as it does under XP), performance seems snappy, it runs in a window, you name it. In fact, all that's left is for it to show up in the Games Explorer, which it currently does not.

F.E.A.R., Call of Duty 2, Rise of Legends
It's well-known that F.E.A.R. is a real system hog. Sure, it's one of the most technologically impressive action games yet released, but to really enjoy it with all the bells and whistles you need a hefty PC with lots of RAM and a beefy video card. It just so happens, that's what we have here.
And boy, do you want a lot of RAM. With only 1GB of RAM in our system, gameplay was a bit choppy with frequent hard drive access. Upgrading to 2GB fixed this problem.
In multiplayer, the same problem exists with servers using Punkbuster as with Battlefield 2.
Call of Duty 2
Infinity Ward's epic WWII shooter runs quite well, with no problems during installation or gameplay. Curiously, though CoD2 uses Punkbuster and we joined Punkbuster-enabled servers, we never got the permissions error we got in other games. It looks like you can play CoD2 online without checking the "run as Admin" box. Performance was just a little beneath Windows XP with no AA/AF applied, but enabling those features slowed things down considerably. It was still playable with our high-end card, but we're talking 38fps instead of 50fps. It's not as bad as the situation with F.E.A.R., at least.
As an interesting side-note: when we benchmark Call of Duty 2, reads our recorded single-player demo file from the main/demos subdirectory and then dumps out a results file in the same place. This didn't work under Vista at first, because the OS prohibits applications from writing to or modifying anything under the Program Files directory (where Call of Duty is stored) with limited permissions. If we run the game as Administrator, the benchmark results file is produced as expected.
Rise of Legends
Installation runs smoothly, but when you launch the game you get a warning that your sound card drivers are out of date, and therefore hardware accelerated audio will be disabled. The game still sounds great without hardware accelerated audio – we'll chalk this up under the "Creative needs better Vista drivers" category and move on. Hardware-accelerated 3D audio is less critical in a real-time strategy game like this than in, say, an immersive first-person shooter.

The game exhibited one other, more distracting, problem. Throughout play, the upper left corner of the screen flickered constantly. It's hard to say if this is an ATI driver problem, a Vista problem, or a game problem, but it's very distracting to have about 1/8th of your screen flickering as though it's running at a very, very low refresh rate while the rest of it looks fine. We tried playing around with the video options, but nothing made it go away. Unfortunately, due to the rapidly flashing nature of the problem, we couldn't capture it in a screenshot.
Outside of those two errors, the game runs just fine, and performance feels about on par with Windows XP.

Grand Theft Auto, Black & White 2, Ghost Recon
Here's a curious one. The game installs and runs just fine. There are no visual or audio glitches, performance is just fine, and the game even shows up in the Games Explorer. That's the curious part.

The title of the game in Games Explorer is Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas ["AO" Version], meaning that this is one of the original releases of the game that could be modified with the controversial "Hot Coffee" mod that caused the ESRB to retroactively change the rating to Adults Only. But the actual rating in the system is still Mature, as you can see from the screenshot below.

Beyond this one error in the rating, the game is good to go on Vista.

Black & White 2
This game is another performance hog, at least when all the graphics details are turned up. We were surprised how well it ran at 1600x1200 (with no anti-aliasing). It feels about as smooth as it does with a similarly configured machine running Windows XP. We didn't have any problems playing on several different worlds or playing around with all the game options. If they add Black & White 2 to the Games Explorer, we'll call this one ready to roll on Vista.

Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter
During installation, the game installs the PhysX driver from Ageia, even if you don't have a PhysX hardware card. At this point, you'll see a warning that the PhysX driver won't support hardware acceleration under anything but Windows XP, but PhysX software support will still function.

After that warning, the game works just fine under Vista, both single and multiplayer (once you let the game through the Windows firewall, just as you would under WinXP with Service Pack 2). Performance was acceptable, and all games modes worked. All the graphics options seemed to work fine, even windowed mode.

Prognosis: Good, But Still Needs Work
Overall, we're pretty happy with the state of gaming on Vista. This isn't a release candidate yet – we're still at beta 2. This is where most things should work, with only a few minor problems to work out between Microsoft, the games makers, and the hardware driver writers. On the whole, that's exactly where it's at.
There appear to be two big problems, from our admittedly limited testing. The first is StarForce copy protection. Its reliance on a hidden Ring 0 driver causes a compatibility problem with Vista that prevents games using StarForce from loading – at least, that's the best explanation we can come up with for the errors we found. It's very disappointing that there hasn't been a fix for this so far. The driver requirements of Vista have been known for quite a long time, and both Microsoft and games publishers should have been pressuring StarForce for a proper Vista driver since at least last summer.
This may be a moot point in the future. Both Ubisoft and CDV, the two largest users of StarForce protection, have announced they're dropping the controversial content protection scheme.
The second big problem is performance. Though many games ran quite well, in many cases "feeling" the same as they do under Windows XP, there is currently a performance drop associated with running games under Vista. It varies from game to game, but it seems as though turning on anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering cause the biggest performance problems. You definitely want some high-end hardware to play demanding games like F.E.A.R. under Vista. Fortunately, today's high-end gear will be mid-range stuff by the time Vista ships, and there are still quite a few months for the video card drivers to improve.
We suspect that most of these issues are driver related. Both Nvidia and ATI have acknowledged that their Vista drivers aren't performance optimized yet. So if you are using Vista Beta 2, and are running games on it, keep an eye out for new video and audio driver releases.
RAM is another sore spot. Vista uses a lot, and you really do want a machine with 1GB to make things run well. Everything – games and normal windows operations – ran a whole lot smoother when we bumped things up to 2GB. For Vista, it seems as though 1GB is the equivalent of running XP with 512MB, and 2GB is like running XP with 1GB.
It's a bit disappointing that only three of the dozen games we tested showed up in the Games Explorer: The Sims 2, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. I'm sure if we tested hundreds of titles we would find more there, but the ratio doesn't look good. The games we tested aren't exactly off the beaten path, after all. You can certainly drag whatever shortcut you want into the Game Explorer, but it won't automatically download box art and ESRB ratings info. Given that we saw our first demo of the Games Explorer back at Meltdown last summer, we would expect far better support by now.
